Well of course it's voluntary. They didn't MAKE you take it to keep your job - you could just quit, and not be able to keep a roof over your head or feed your children. And you don't HAVE to take it in order to visit your mother in the nursing home; you could just not go, and leave her to rot in her own soiled nappies, or starve to death, or just pine away from lack of loving human company. Perfectly reasonable.
